The Royal Guest
The day work is done and the night
is pitch dark, with doors in hamlet
all shut make us think the last
guest too had arrived for the night.
But some said the King was to come
making us laugh, believe it cannot be
though we felt some knocks on the door
and we said it was nothing but the wind.
We put out the lamps too and lay down to sleep
when some thought the messenger had come
making us laugh, saying, it must be the wind
though there was a sound in dead of the night.
We sleepily thought it must be a thunder
when the earth shook and walls rocked
and it indeed troubled us in our sleep
as some held it was the sound of wheels.
Lazily, in mind, we murmured, ‘clouds rumbling’
for the night was still dark as the drum sounded
with the voice, ‘Wake up! Delay not!’
Trembling we pressed our hands on our hearts.
But some said, ‘Behold the King’s flag’
as we stood on our feet wailing, ‘There is no time
to delay for the King has come, but where are the lights
and the wreaths and the throne to seat him?’
‘Where is the hall and where are the decorations?’
But someone said, ‘Pointless is this cry, greet Him
with empty hands leading Him to your empty rooms.
Open your doors and sound the conch-shells!
In the depth of the night as thunder roars
the King has come to our dark and dreary home!
Bring out your tattered piece of mat and spread
in the yard since our King has come suddenly.

Time to Go
The day is no more and the shade
is on the face of the earth with time to go
to the stream to fill my pitcher, for the evening
air is zealous with the sad music of the water.
It calls me into the dusk
with no passer-by in the lonely
lane winding through the twilight
and the ripples are rampant in the river.
I know not if I shall come back home
and I know not whom, by chance, I shall meet
but at the fording in a little boat
the unknown man plays his lute.

Time to Go
Now I have my leave
to go my brothers
and sisters, hence,
please bid me farewell.I bow to you all and take my departure
and here I give back the keys of my door.
Now I give up all claims to my house
but ask only for last kind words from you
as we were neighbours for so long
when I received more than I could give.
Now the day has dawned and the lamp
that lit my dark
corner is outfor a summons has come to me
and I am ready for my journey.

Final Feat
Oh my death, you are the final feat
of my life, come hence, and whisper to me
for I keep watching for you daily, enduring
for your sake the joys and pains of my life.
All that I am, all that I have, all that I hope
and all my love always flowed towards you
in the depth of secrecy, and with one final
glance from you forever my life will be yours.
The flowers are now woven and the garland
is ready for the bridegroom, and after the wedding
the bride shall leave her home to meet you,
her master, alone in the solitude of the night.
